The 2018 Global Brand Counterfeiting Report estimated that losses suffered due to counterfeiting in 2017 was $1.2 trillion. It’s an astounding number, and the online portion of this total is still massive, clocking in at $323 billion. The counterfeiters are using a variety of online channels to sell fake goods, including rogue websites, top level domains (e.g., .biz or .net) social media sites, such as Instagram, and mainstream marketplaces, including Amazon.
The consequences of counterfeiting for brands are considerable, and include plunging prices as brands compete against cut-rate counterfeit dealers; the hit on reputation as poor knockoffs get in the marketplace, the damage to partner relationships and the cost of legal fees as you fight back.
